A China-linked hacker group has hidden a backdoor in the Linux login system for almost a decade. According to Sygnia, which tracks the group known as Velvet Ant, they backdoored the PAM and OpenSSH components responsible for user login. This method allowed them to implant access in a way that typical network cleanup efforts could not detect.
