The phenomenon where JPEG images displayed very small in Chrome appear thicker than in Firefox is due to the combination of partial IDCT scaling and subsequent downscaling algorithms. When decompressing large JPEG files before downscaling, there is significant memory wastage. For instance, a 2000×2000 bitmap is about 12MB but reduces to approximately 1.2KB when downscaled to a final size of 20×20.
