An AWS billing bug led to trillion-dollar estimates for customers.
A configuration change in AWS's billing computation system resulted in customers receiving bill estimates in the billions and trillions of dollars for over 24 hours. AWS's own alarms detected the anomalies but failed to stop bill generation or alert engineers. Customer escalations informed the company 4.5 hours later. Additionally, budget and cost anomaly alerts were disabled across the platform during mitigation.
